Quinebaug River Prehistoric Archaeological District

A Connecticut State Archaeological Preserve

Atlatl weights, sometimes called “banner stones”, were attached to atlatls (spear-throwers) and acted as counterweights to long darts. The shape of this artifact indicates it was likely made between 4,500 and 3,000 years ago. The arrow in the inset figure points to where the weight would have been mounted on an atlatl. This fragment of an atlatl weight, found at Site 22-29, is unfinished and was likely broken during manufacture.
